Lake Como vs Amalfi Coast: What the Same Wedding Actually Costs in Each

We ran the same 70-guest Italian wedding through our budget calculator twice — once for Lake Como, once for the Amalfi Coast. The €8,862 difference isn't where most couples expect.

We ran the same 70-guest wedding through our budget calculator twice — once for Lake Como, once for the Amalfi Coast. The gap is smaller than the reputation suggests, and it's hiding in one line item.

"Is the Amalfi Coast really that much more expensive than Lake Como?" It's one of the most common questions we get from couples weighing up Italy's two most iconic wedding regions. Everyone has an instinct — the Amalfi Coast is the expensive one, Lake Como is the refined alternative — but when we pressed for specifics, nobody could tell us exactly how much more, or where the money actually goes differently.

So we stopped guessing and ran the numbers.

The controlled comparison

We used our Italian Wedding Budget Calculator to price the same wedding in both regions. Everything identical — 70 guests, peak season (May–September), standard plated catering, premium open bar, videography included, two-day celebration. The only variables: region and the natural venue style for each.

Lake Como got a villa/estate (the typical Lake Como choice). The Amalfi Coast got a luxury hotel (the default for that coastline). Both are the venue types couples actually book in each region — we weren't going to compare a Lake Como palazzo with an Amalfi B&B.

The headline numbers

Lake Como: €96,312. Amalfi Coast: €105,174.

That's a gap of €8,862 — roughly 9%. Meaningful, but probably smaller than you expected. The Amalfi Coast's reputation as "the expensive one" suggests a chasm; the reality is a modest premium. And when you dig into the line-by-line breakdown, the story gets more interesting.

The venue line is the whole story

Look at the breakdown and one row jumps out immediately. Venue hire: €15,840 for a Lake Como villa versus €22,770 for an Amalfi Coast luxury hotel. That's a €6,930 difference — which accounts for 78% of the total gap between the two weddings.

Everything else? Within a few hundred euros, and several Amalfi categories are actually lower. Catering comes in €560 cheaper on the coast. Flowers and decor save €300. Bar and drinks are €315 less. The day-to-day running costs of the wedding are essentially the same in both regions.

The explanation is structural. Amalfi Coast luxury hotels bundle more into a higher headline venue fee — you're paying for the cliff-top real estate, the infinity pool, the existing infrastructure. Lake Como villas price the space lower, but you build everything up from there: catering, bar, lighting, staffing. The total converges because what the venue doesn't include, you spend elsewhere.

The wedding itself costs about the same. The real estate is the variable.

What this means for your decision

If you love a region, don't let a vague sense of "it's more expensive" steer you away. The regional premium lives almost entirely in the venue line — and that's the most controllable part of your budget. Moving to shoulder season, choosing a different venue style within the same region, or adjusting your guest count by 10–15 people can shift the venue cost more than changing region entirely.

And remember: both of these numbers come with enormous ranges. Our Lake Como estimate spans €55,656 to €176,546. The Amalfi Coast runs €57,842 to €200,785. The spread within a single region dwarfs the difference between regions. A modest Lake Como wedding can cost less than an extravagant Tuscan one. Where you celebrate matters less than how.

Run your own numbers

These are just two scenarios. Your wedding has different variables — a different guest count, a different season, different priorities on catering and entertainment. The comparison above is a starting point, not a forecast.
