La Foce is one of the most storied and visually stunning estates in all of Tuscany. Set high in the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia between Montepulciano and Chianciano Terme, the estate is famous for its iconic winding cypress-lined road — one of the most photographed landscapes in Italy — and its extraordinary gardens designed by English architect Cecil Pinsent. The property was made internationally famous by Anglo-American writer Iris Origo, who with her husband Antonio purchased the estate in 1924 and spent decades transforming it from a neglected landscape into one of Italy's most celebrated gardens and cultural centres. Her memoir, War in Val d'Orcia, became a literary classic. Today, La Foce offers weddings for up to 200 guests in a setting of unmatched natural beauty, with ceremonies in the terraced gardens, receptions on panoramic terraces overlooking the Val d'Orcia, and accommodation across beautifully restored farmhouses scattered across the estate. The combination of literary heritage, garden grandeur, and UNESCO landscape makes La Foce one of Italy's most distinguished wedding destinations.

La Foce — wedding venue in Chianciano Terme, Tuscany
La Foce dates back to the late 15th century as a hospice for pilgrims along the Via Francigena. By the time Antonio and Iris Origo purchased it in 1924, the estate had fallen into neglect. The young couple — he Italian nobility, she the daughter of a wealthy American diplomat and an Anglo-Irish mother — embarked on an ambitious project to restore the land and buildings.
Iris Origo commissioned Cecil Pinsent, the English architect already renowned for his work on Bernard Berenson's Villa I Tatti, to design the gardens at La Foce. The result is a masterpiece of Italianate garden design: terraced boxes of hedging, lemon trees in terracotta pots, wisteria pergolas, and geometric lawns that descend the hillside with the Val d'Orcia spreading endlessly beyond. Iris documented her life at La Foce in several books, most famously War in Val d'Orcia, which recorded her wartime experiences sheltering refugees and children at the estate.
