Villa La Massa is a luxury five-star hotel occupying a magnificent 16th-century Renaissance villa on the south bank of the River Arno in the hamlet of Candeli, surrounded by the rolling hills of Chianti and Rufina. The central body of the villa dates back to the 13th century, though it was in 1525 that it became the country residence of Sante Landini, a prominent Florentine publisher. Extended in the 18th and early 19th centuries and converted into a hotel in 1948, the property today offers 51 rooms and suites divided across five historic buildings: the Villa Nobile, the Mill, the Villino, the Casa Colonica, and the Limonaia. The spirit of the Renaissance pervades the older buildings, where canopied beds, frescoes, tapestries, silks, and brocades create interiors of extraordinary refinement, while the newer buildings offer a more contemporary Florentine elegance. For weddings, the hotel provides a banqueting hall seating up to 70 guests, a charming 19th-century chapel for intimate ceremonies of thirty to forty guests, and the possibility of exclusive hire of the Casa Colonica with its four suites and private kitchen.
